Requirements for Attending NYLT
NYLT is an excellent training opportunity for youth unit leaders, as well as older Scouts and Venturers. To participate, all youth must meet the following qualifications before the course begins:
Eligibility Requirements
-
Be a registered member of a Scouting unit.
-
Have a current Scouting America Health and Medical Record, Parts A, B, and C.
-
Scouts BSA participants: Must be at least 13 and have completed Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops (ILST).
-
Venturers and Sea Scouts: Must be at least 14, or 13 and completed 8th grade, and within the age limits of their program. They must have completed Introduction to Leadership Skills for Crews or Ships. One year of camping experience is recommended.
Note: While NYLT is not an outdoor skills course, participants must have basic camping and outdoor cooking experience.
-
Have a unit leader recommendation.
-
The recommendation must be emailed to the course director and staff advisor before Participant Orientation.
-
Please ask your Scoutmaster or Crew Advisor to send the written recommendation (including their contact information) to vivian.schneider@scouting.org and aacnyltspring26@gmail.com
-
All participants must attend Participant Orientation at McGimsey Scout Park.
Important Note About Participant Readiness
Question: “Our troop’s ASPL has been in the unit for two years. He struggles socially and needs training. I think NYLT can straighten him out.”
Answer: Incorrect. Even if a youth meets the basic requirements, the unit leader’s signature on the registration form serves as a personal recommendation confirming the Scout’s leadership potential and strong character.
NYLT staff focus on developing youth who already have the desire and maturity to grow as leaders. They are not able to correct behavioral issues or manage undisciplined participants. Your thoughtful selection of participants ensures your unit receives the full benefit of this training.
